Notes from the Payroll Prof
by Roger A. Smith, CPP & Payroll Consultant
National Payroll Week!
If you’re reading this between September 3 and 7, Happy National Payroll Week! (If you’re reading this after September 7, a belated “Happy National Payroll Week!”) National Payroll Week (NPW) celebrates the hard work by America's 146 million wage earners and the payroll professionals who pay them. Together, through the payroll withholding system, they contribute, collect, report and deposit approximately $1.6 trillion, or 64.3%, of the annual revenue of the U.S. Treasury.
Payroll professionals across the country are celebrating NPW in various ways including government proclamations, community involvement, media events, and introducing high school students to the world of paychecks (and withholdings) via the “Money Matters” lesson plan. Be sure to visit the NPW website (http://nationalpayrollweek.com ) to learn all about NPW. While there, you can take a fun little survey and become eligible to win a week’s paycheck and a trip to Las Vegas!
Here are some other tidbits I picked up from the NPW website:
- According to the 2006 American Payroll Association (APA) national online survey, “GETTING PAID IN AMERICA,” nearly two-thirds, or 65% of America’s workers would experience financial difficulties if their paychecks were delayed for just one week—indicating that workers are living paycheck to paycheck.
- The American Payroll Association commissioned songwriter Al McCree and Nashville singing sensation Brandon Sandefur to create the sound of National Payroll Week. What they came up with is the original hit, "America Works." You can hear the song by clicking here.
- The NPW 2006 "Getting Paid In America" online survey was extremely successful with over 30,000 respondents! Even more are expected this year!
• Only 18% of respondents to last year’s survey knew how much the President of the United States is paid.
• An online paycheck calculator, powered by PaycheckCity.com, is available by clicking here.
- You can even send an NPW e-card from the website!
Celebrate NPW! If you’re getting a paycheck, thank a payroll professional. If you are a hardworking payroll professional, Congratulations!
I’d love to hear how you celebrated NPW. Let me know and I’ll share your experiences in a future column. My email address is Roger.Smith@payrollprof.com .
