Summer Reading 2009
School’s either out, or soon will be, the weather has warmed up, vacations are upon us, and it’s time for my annual summer reading list. Again this year, we have an eclectic mix taken from my own experience and several recommended lists. While I haven’t read all of these books, I thought I’d pass along this brief overview of the ones that I enjoyed, or that sound interesting to me. Sweeping new Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations finalized!
The Department of Labor has released final regulations covering the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and addressing new military family leave entitlements for employees. The department says that many of the revisions were designed to clarify the requirements that the FMLA imposes on both employees and employers and to improve the communication between employers and employees. The new FMLA rules are effective on January 16, 2009. [more]
95 Paper Workers to Receive $11.75M Labor Settlement
The Alaska Pulp Corporation (APC) of Sitka, Alaska agreed to pay about 95 former employees more than $11.75 million in back wages and retirement benefits under a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board. [more]
HR Managers Predict Problems if EFCA Passes
Ninety-five percent of employers say that American businesses would be hurt if the proposed Employee Free Choice Act were to become law, but far fewer say that unions would be successful in organizing employees at their own organization, according to a survey conducted by BLR's HR Daily Advisor.
